Alkhawaldeh Competes in Olympic Marathon
August 10, 2024 | General
Mo'ath Alkhawaldeh, a financial and program analyst for the Arab Barometer, a research network based in the Princeton politics department, made his Olympic debut on Saturday in the marathon, finishing 65th in a field that began with 81 runners.
Representing Jordan, Alkhawaldeh finished in 2:20.01, a season-best time that was just short of his personal best of 2:18.43, run in September 2022, and of the Jordanian record of 2:17.24, set in 2015.
The Washington Post profiled Alkhawaldeh on the eve of the marathon, detailing the 35-year-old's return to running after injury and illness derailed his bid to run in the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola won the gold medal in 2:06.26, surpassing a 16-year-old Olympic record by nine seconds. Belgium's Bashir Abdi won silver in 2:06.47 and Kenya's Benson Kipruto won bronze in 2:07.00.
