IRVINE, Calif.- The Princeton men's water polo team took on the UC Irvine Anteaters for the second time this season. Once again, a final goal from Gavin Appeldorn was the difference maker as the Tigers took a 9-8 victory over the Anteaters to stop Princeton's four game skid.
#15 Princeton 9, #16 UC Irvine 8
The Tigers got on the board first with a goal from Luke Johnston. From there, Logan McCarroll and Tigran Sennett each scored to give Princeton three goals in the first quarter, while the defense worked to shut out UC Irvine.
A pair of penalty shots in the second pushed the score to 5-1 at the halftime break.
UC Irvine looked to battle back, scoring four goals in the third. The Tigers, however, kept pace and scored three of their own to hold a three score lead heading into the final frame.
The Anteaters found the back of the cage three times in the fourth in a late rally attempt, but Appeldorn's powerplay goal ended up being the last push Princeton needed to hold off UC Irvine for the win.
The win was a full team effort as all nine Princeton tallies were scored by different players. Ádám Peocz had a three point outing with a goal and two assists for the Tigers. Pierre du Plessis recorded a double digit save performance with 10 stops.
