How It Happened
Princeton and Penn State both came out with energy, trading the lead through the first part of the set. Trailing at 11-7, the Tigers embarked on a 5-0 run to take the lead, capped off with a huge block by Whitfield and Werner. After holding onto the lead through 17 points, however, Penn State would answer with a run of their own, and the Nittany Lions took set one 25-18.
In set two, Penn State took an early lead, leaving the Tigers to chip away at it over the bulk of the set. With Werner and Vaccaro making four kills apiece, Princeton was able to tie it up at 16 points. Penn State reclaimed its narrow lead, and despite the Tigers bringing themselves within two at 20-22, PSU claimed the second set 25-20.
In set three, Penn State again took the lead early, this time building it up to eight points by 19-11. Staying resilient, Princeton began chipping away at the deficit as Vaccaro made two more kills. A 3-1 run followed by a 4-0 run helped the Tigers bring themselves within two as Kelly made a perfectly placed ace at 22-24, but Penn State was able to make the match point before the Tigers could answer.
