Hunter Spiess Named Ivy Defensive Player Of The Week; Tigers Up To No. 2
April 13, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse
Princeton men's lacrosse junior Hunter Spiess has been named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after Princeton's 20-8 win over Penn this past Saturday. It is the first such honor for Spiess in his career.Â
Spiess guarded Penn's Griffin Scane, who came into the game as the Quakers' second-leading goal scorer with 22, along with four assists, and held him without a goal or an assist. Spiess also had seven groundballs and a caused turnover, and he now leads all Ivy non-faceoff-specialists in groundballs per game.
The win over Penn moved Princeton up one spot in the Kane Inside Lacrosse media poll, as the Tigers are now No. 2. Princeton was also ranked second in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.Â
The win over Penn, along with Brown's win over Dartmouth, sealed three of the four Ivy League tournament spots, as Princeton, Cornell and Harvard all clinched their appearances. The host site and the fourth team? There's a long way to go until that is decided, even with only six total Ivy games to play on the final two weekends. If you're wondering, this week's league games have Princeton at Harvard, Cornell at Dartmouth and Penn at Brown, with Dartmouth at Princeton, Yale at Brown and Harvard at Cornell on April 25.Â
Right now, Princeton, Harvard and Cornell are all tied at 3-1 in the league, followed by 3-2 Yale, 2-3 Penn, 1-3 Brown and 0-4 Dartmouth. Only the Big Green have been mathematically eliminated.Â
Princeton, Harvard and Cornell would all be assured of at least a share of the Ivy championship by winning their final two games. Cornell would be the host with two wins, regardless of any other outcome; Princeton would be the host with two wins and one Cornell loss. Harvard would host with two wins of its own, while Yale is still mathematically alive to host as well. Also, the Bulldogs would get the fourth spot in the tournament with a win over Brown. Penn (win out, Brown win over Yale) or Brown (beat Penn and Yale) could also take the fourth spot. No matter what happens this weekend, the fourth ILT spot cannot be clinched until the 25th.Â
