PRINCETON, N.J. (1/6/16) - The Princeton men's hockey team hosts No. 20 Rensselaer in a rare Thursday night showdown, before taking on Union on Friday night. Both games begin at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
EYE ON THE TIGERSThe Tigers play their final weekend of games before semester exams and break. The University is currently in “reading week”, as the students prepare for exams. Princeton is 4-12 overall and coming off of a last minute loss to Holy Cross from Saturday, its last wins being a sweep of Brown/Yale on the road in early December. In the ECAC, the Tigers are 3-7 to sit in a three-way tie for seventh place. Freshman Ryan Kuffner and sophomore David Hallisey sit atop the scoring column with 10 points apiece. Kuffner has four goals and six assists, while Hallisey has three goals and a team-best seven assists. Sophomore Eric Robinson adds a team-high six goals and two assist for eight points while junior Ryan Siiro is a point back with seven. Freshman Max Véronneau is second on the team in goals with five. Junior Colton Phinney has started every single game in goal and has a .928 save percentage and a 2.92 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
Rensselaer is ranked No. 20 in this week’s USCHO national poll, cracking it for the first time this season and is receiving votes in the USA Today poll. The Engineers are 11-7-3 overall and with a 4-1-3 ECAC mark, they are tied for third in the standings. After starting the season 1-4 the team went on a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2). RPI hasn’t played a league game since Dec. 4-5, sweeping Arizona State at home before splitting at Miami. The team has been on the road since Dec. 31, stopping in Pittsburgh earlier in the week in its trek between Ohio and New Jersey. Junior Riley Bourbonnais has scored 12 goals and six assists for 18 points. Sophomore Lou Nanne (MIN) adds four goals and nine assists, while junior Jake Wood has seven goals and five assists. Both senior Zach Schroeder and sophomore defenseman Mike Prapavessis (DAL) have 11 points apiece, with Prapavessis owning a team-high 10 assists. Senior Jason Kasdorf (BUF) has started in 12 games, while freshman Cam Hackett has started in 10. They have similar numbers with Kasdorf owning a .934 save percentage and a 2.12 GAA, while Hackett has a .933 save percentage and a 2.34 GAA.
THE PRINCETON/RENSSELAER SERIES
Rensselaer owns a 66-33-10 advantage in the all-time series, which first began on Jan. 18, 1952. The Engineers have won the last two meetings. Senior Mike Ambrosia has three points in three games, while Ben Foster, Ryan Siiro and Kyle Rankin have two each. Colton Phinney has an .897 save percentage in four games.
SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
Union sports a 9-6-4 overall record and have hit its stride lately, going 6-0-1 since American Thanksgiving. In league play the Dutchmen are 2-5-1 but haven’t play a conference game since early December, with four non-league games in between. Sophomores Spencer Foo and Ryan Scarfo have the most goals on the team, with 10 apiece. Foo adds nine assists for a team-best 19 points, while Scarfo is third in points with 13 as he adds three apples. Junior Mike Vecchione has two more points with five goals and 10 helpers. Freshman Brett Supinksi, senior Matt Wilkins and sophomore Nick DeSimone add 10 points apiece. Junior Alex Sakellaropoulos has started in 15 of the team’s 19 games and owns a .922 save percentage and a 2.30 GAA. Freshman Jake Kupsky (SJS) has the other four decisions and has an .893 and 3.24.
THE PRINCETON/UNION SERIES
Union holds a slim 28-22-6 edge in the series sine it began on Dec. 15, 1982. The Tigers look to snap a 12-game winless skid in the series with the Dutchmen. Princeton’s last win was back on March 15, 2009, a 3-1 game at Hobey Baker Rink as Union is 10-0-2 as of late. Senior Michael Zajac is the only skate to have more than one point on the Dutchmen. Ben Halford and Colton Phinney split the series last year. Phinney has a .916 save percentage in his three career games, while Halford has an .838.
