No. 7 Yale Defeats Princeton, 6-0, in Men's Hockey

BOX SCORE
PRINCETON, N.J. (2/27/16) - A four-goal first period pushed No. 7 Yale to a 6-0 win over Princeton in men’s hockey on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Bulldogs tacked on goals in both the second and third periods for their eighth straight victory. Chris Izmirlian paced the offense as he assisted on the first three goals.
Izmirlian won a foot race to the puck at the end boards and dished off to JM Piotrowski at the top of the left circle. He one-timed a shot that deflected off one of his teammates that had collapsed onto Colton Phinney after a nudge by his defender. Piotrowski collected his own rebound and fired in the goal. The goal was reviewed and stood tall.
Rob O’Gara and Izmirlian teamed up on a give-and-go to make it 2-0 at 7:35 before Henry Hart tallied his first career goal at 9:41.
“The first goal, our defender pushes a guy on top of our goaltender. It was an impossible situation for Colton to react to,” Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. “A bad line change, they come down 4-one-2 and now it’s 2-0. Their skill coupled with bad mistakes on our behalf created a very lopsided game.”
Mike Doherty set up Carson Cooper for a backdoor power-play goal at 13:29.
Stu Wilson scored the final two goals, his first coming during a five-minute major penalty on Tommy Davis in the second period. He added his second, and the final goal, at 15:26 of the third.
“We played very smart, very patient. We didn’t complicate matters,” Fogarty said about the first meeting this season in which Princeton won 4-2 at Ingalls Rinks. “We complicated matters tonight. It was totally different team on the ice. Down 2-0 everyone tries to do something more and gets outside of their abilities. Some players are trying to create something that they can’t do, and that creates more turnovers.”
Yale (19-5-4, 14-4-3 ECAC) had a 50-20 shot advantage in the game, as Phinney made 44 saves.
Princeton (5-21-2, 3-16-2) hosts Brown in the final home game of the season, tomorrow at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink on Senior Day. Brown lost a 4-1 game to ECAC regular-season champion Quinnipiac this evening.
