What made you choose a career in healthcare?
An interest in science and desire to help people.
What is the focus of your work today?
I run a Hospitalist service (inpatient medicine service for adults) at Princeton Medical Center, which is now part of Penn Medicine.
How has your work changed in the face of COVID-19?
It’s hard to capture what it was like to lead a team of inpatient based clinicians into and during the pandemic. There was so much uncertainty in wanting to keep clinicians safe and help patients, knowing little to nothing about an entity that continues to defy many pathophysiologic and most epidemiological expectations.Lauren Hogshire (Hofmann)

How did being a Princeton student-athlete prepare you for the challenges you’ve faced?
I took my position a year and a half before the pandemic, and spent most of that time team building. By the time the pandemic started, we were a cohesive team facing a challenge together - which felt very much like being a part of an athletic team. Every single one of my team’s clinicians (about 30 doctors and 5 nurse practitioners) was up to the task, which was amazing to witness. I wouldn’t have thought twice about one of them coming to me and saying the risk / reward wasn’t there, or that they needed to step back. But not one of them did - that is the level of dedication they felt to our mission, their oath, and to each other.
What keeps you inspired as you look ahead?
The willingness of so many to offer help, and the commonality of the human condition. It’s unifying, even if society obscures the ways in which we are all alike.
