This update, effective immediately, reflects a shift in eligibility rules for men’s and women’s sports, but it’s essential to understand that these changes don’t alter our commitment to supporting every student-athlete, regardless of gender identity.
Here are the key points from the policy update:
- Men’s Sports: All student-athletes, regardless of sex assigned at birth or gender identity, can participate in NCAA men’s sports as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
- Women’s Sports: The policy now limits participation in women’s sports to student-athletes assigned female at birth. However, transgender student-athletes assigned male at birth can still practice with women’s teams and receive all other applicable benefits, such as medical care.
- Inclusivity on Campus: The NCAA is also urging all schools to create environments that are welcoming and respectful to all student-athletes. This includes providing support through mental health resources, in line with the NCAA's updated Mental Health Best Practices.
We understand that this news may bring up many different emotions, and we encourage you to reach out to your coaches, athletics departments, and mental health professionals. You are an important part of our community, and we care deeply about your success, both on and off the field.
