Pat Shawaryn, who experienced a championship career as both a head coach and libero at Juniata College, just completed his third season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Princeton men's volleyball team.
In the shortened 2020 season, Shawaryn helped guide the Tigers to a 7-2 record in conference play and their first win over UCLA in program history.
Shawaryn's 2019 campaign at Princeton was a memorable one, as he helped coach one of the great turnarounds in NCAA volleyball history. The Tigers opened the season at 1-11, but battled back — including the program's first ever season sweep of Penn State — to claim the final EIVA postseason spot. Princeton went on to upset top-seeded George Mason in the EIVA semifinal before falling in a tight four-set final.
Shawaryn posted a 47-23 record in three seasons at Juniata, and he guided the Eagles to a pair of conference titles and the 2014 NCAA Division III championship match. The Eagles ranked in the Top 20 nationally in most statistical categories during that 2014 season, and he coached five All-America honorees throughout his head coaching career.
"We are very excited to have Pat join our Princeton Volleyball family," Shweisky said upon his hiring. "He brings with him both a tremendous work ethic and great head coaching experience. Pat and I have worked together for years in the USA Youth National development pipeline, so we have a great working relationship already established. Pat's meticulous attention to detail will add tremendously to our training gym, match preparation, and increase our bandwidth in regards to recruiting. Princeton Volleyball just took a big step forward with the hiring of Pat Shawaryn. Welcome aboard, Pat!"
Shawaryn, who also served as assistant coach at his alma mater prior to his elevation as head coach, has worked with the USA Select & Youth Teams at the USA High Performance Championships since 2013. Recently, he was selected as the head coach for the USA Boy's A2 Volleyball Camp in Colorado Spring (2015 and 2016). Shawaryn also served as the head coach for the USA Boy's Future Select Camp in Colorado Springs, as well as the assistant coach for USA Boy's Select Holiday Camp.
During his time as assistant coach at Juniata, he was named the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Assistant Coach of the Year and helped produce four American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III All-Americans with our head coach.
A libero on Juniata's 2004 NCAA championship team, Shawaryn began his career as a successful coach at both the high school and club levels.
