NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In front of 3,486 raucous fans who were ready for a big weekend. Those fans grew louder throughout the first period as their heroes blasted 16 shots against Dave Stathos. The only one that went in hit a Princeton skate, but it was enough to give Yale a lead. Ben Stafford was credited with the goal.
Stathos' dominated the second and third periods as well, and he finally received some help from his offense. Princeton tied the game when defenseman Chris Barber intercepted a pass in the Yale defensive zone and fired a shot at goaltender Dan Lombard. Benoit Morin positioned himself in front of the net and redirected the shot top shelf.
The third period was a story of special teams. Yale impressed first when it dominated a five-minute power-play for the Tigers. After Jay Quenville was given a major penalty for hitting Morin from behind, the Bulldogs played an aggressive penalty-kill and kept the Tigers from getting any good looks. When it was over, the Yale faithful cheered their heroes wildly. The momentum was clearly on Yale's side. After a bench penalty, the Tigers were forced to match Yale's effort on the penalty-kill.
They did one better. Ethan Doyle stole the puck from freshman Bryan Freeman and scored on a breakaway to give Princeton its first win of the season. Stathos ended the game with 33 saves and was named ECAC Goaltender of the Week.
