PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey team captured four points during a pivotal ECAC weekend at Baker Rink, defeating the conference's top two teams, Cornell and Colgate.
The two victories improve Princeton to 3-4-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the ECAC. In a tight, early-season race, Princeton finds itself tied for fourth place with nine points, just one point behind league-leaders Colgate, Harvard and Yale, but also only three points from the eighth spot in the standings.
Behind the sensational goaltending of Dave Stathos, the Tigers beat Cornell 5-2 Friday, Dec. 3, and defeated conference-leading Colgate 5-1 on Saturday.
Stathos, voted the game's No. 1 star each night, stopped 32 shots against the Big Red, including 27 during the first two periods, and then turned aside 29 of 30 shots from the Red Raiders.
Brad Parsons scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season against Colgate, and Benoit Morin picked-up four assists as Princeton stunned the conference's top team. After a scoreless first period the Tigers' Chris Corrinet notched a power-play goal to give Princeton a 1-0 lead. Morin and David Schneider assisted on Corrinet's goal as well as Parsons' power-play tally at the 12-minute mark as Princeton took a 2-0 lead on Colgate.
The Red Raiders' Sean Nolan cut the lead to one at 2-1, but Princeton captain Darren Yopyk scored his second goal in two nights as Princeton held a 3-1 lead after two periods. Parsons added a goal early in the third period, and David Del Monte scored his first of the year into an empty net.
Princeton was two for seven on the power play while holding Colgate to one goal in nine opportunities.
In the 5-2 win over Cornell on Friday, Princeton received tremendous goaltending from Stathos and scoring from some unlikely sources.
Stathos, earning his second consecutive start, stopped 32 shots, including 13 in the first period and 14 in the second.
Josh Roberts, who had been held scoreless this season, scored two goals, including the game-winner.
Schneider opened the scoring with a first-period power-play goal, his second of the year. Morin and Parsons collected the assists. After Cornell's Matt McRae tied the game, Yopyk scored his second of the season while the teams skated four-on-four.
Roberts then scored two third-period goals that sandwiched defenseman David Bennett's second goal of the year and a tally by the Big Red's Mark McRae.
Princeton was one for five with the extra man, while Cornell scored on one of its three chances.
The Tigers will travel to Minnesota to play at Bemidji State on Dec. 10 and 11. Both games begin at 7 p.m. The following weekend they will visit South Bend, Ind., for a pair of games against Notre Dame on Dec. 19 and 20. Princeton's next home game is Dec. 30 when it plays an exhibition game against Queen's University.
