NEW BRITAIN, C.T. - The Princeton Tigers were defeated in their season opener by the No. 9 nationally ranked University of Connecticut on opening day of the UConn/New England Ford Dealers Soccer Classic at Willow Brook Stadium Friday evening.
For the University of Connecticut, senior All-America Bobby Rhine tallied two goals in the win.
Rhine got the scoring started for the Huskies at the 15:42 mark of the first half as he took a feed from Roberto Vargas and beat Tiger goalkeeper Keith Lucas. UConn's second goal came off the foot of Vargas as he blasted a 25-yard shot past Lucas after receiving a ball from sophomore Brent Rahim.
After UConn took a 2-0 lead into half, the Tigers struck first during the second period, as at the 51:07 mark, Princeton's Matt Behncke (Fr., Williamsburg, VA) chipped a ball past UConn goalie Matt Chavlovich, to cut the Husky lead in half.
UConn responded though with three more goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. UConn freshman Sam Forko registered his first career goal at the 69:36 mark, and then at the 78:55 mark Rhine tallied his second goal on the evening. Junior Felipe Torres concluded the scoring on the night for UConn as he converted a penalty kick at the 84:36 mark, thus resulting in the final 5-1 margin.
The Classic will continue this Sunday, September 13, at Willow Brook Stadium in New Britain. At 12 Noon on Sunday, Georgetown will face Princeton, followed by Connecticut squaring off against South Florida at 2:30 PM.
