PRINCETON, N.J. - If anybody wondered why Princeton adds a non-conference game at this point in the season, here's why.
After getting in only two practices over the past two weeks due to Finals, the Tigers showed obvious rust in a 6-2 loss to UMass-Lowell. The River Hawks, a Hockey East squad, scored the final four goals to obtain their sixth win of the season. Princeton falls to 6-8-3 overall, although it remains a strong 4-3-3 in the ECAC.
The Tigers got stronger as the game wore on, although starting goaltender Dave Stathos was forced to pay for the early problems. Lowell outshot the Tigers 18-2 in the first period and scored twice on the two-time ECAC Goaltender of the Week. Ed McGrane and Steve Slonina gave the River Hawks an early 2-0 advantage.
Wanting to give each of his goaltenders some time in net, coach Don Cahoon used freshman Nate Nomeland in the second period. The Fargo, N.D., native pitched a shutout, turning away each of Lowell's 12 shots. Princeton cut the deficit in half when Brad Parsons scored his team-high seventh goal of the season off an assist from Benoit Morin. Morin wasn't finished. The senior took a pass from Shane Campbell and beat Cam McCormick for the tying goal at 1:43 of the final period. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not build off that momentum. Chris Bell scored the game-winning goal in a shorthanded situation at 3:56 of the period, and Lowell added three more goals, including an empty-netter by Tom Rouleau, to take the game 6-2. Senior Craig Bradley made 15 saves and allowed three goals in the final period.
Princeton resumes its ECAC schedule this weekend when it hosts Rensselaer and Union at Baker Rink.
