Tigers Stay Perfect Against Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - After a disappointing trip to Bemidji State, the Princeton men's hockey team was looking for a positive end to the 1999 portion of its season. The Tigers traveled to Notre Dame knowing something would have to give ... either their 7-0 lifetime mark against the Fighting Irish or their 0-4 mark in non-conference games.
Two solid performances later, the Tigers were still undefeated against Notre Dame.
Princeton defeated Notre Dame 4-3 on Friday when David Schneider blasted a power-play goal past Jeremiah Kimento for the game-winner at 14:43 of the final period. Schneider, from nearby Winnetka, Ill., thrilled his own fan section when he took a pass from Benoit Morin and lit the lamp for the third time this season.
The goal ended a wild affair in which there were four lead changes, none more than one goal. Notre Dame jumped out early, but captain Darren Yopyk scored his fourth goal of the season late in the first period to even the score at 1-1. Benoit Morin and David Del Monte added goals in the second period, but each was answered by a Notre Dame tally. Schneider's goal put Princeton up for the final time, thanks to some timely goaltending by freshman Nate Nomeland, who made 21 saves to record his first career victory. The second game started in a familiar way, as Notre Dame and Princeton traded back-to-back-to-back-to-back goals. Chris Corrinet scored his team-leading seventh goal to even the score at 1-1 while senior Brad Meredith scored his first goal of the season to even the score at 2-2. Meredith's goal came on the power play, one of three the Tigers would score in the contest.
Shane Campbell put the Tigers ahead to stay with his fourth goal of the season at 17:31 of the second period off assists from Kirk Lamb and Schneider. Del Monte provided some insurance in the third period with another power-play goal. Dave Stathos made a career-high 38 saves, including 17 in the first period, to record his fourth win of the season.
The Tigers return to ECAC play on Friday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Brown.
