PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown senior goaltender Scott Stirling turned aside 49 shots as the Bears defeated Princeton 2-1 in an ECAC men's hockey game at Meehan Auditorium.
With the game tied at 1 in the third period, Brown's Jon Zielinski scored the game-winner at 13:17. Zielinski's initial shot hit a Princeton defenseman, but the Bears' forward managed to knock his second attempt past a screened Dave Stathos. The only assist on Zielinski's second goal of the year went to Tyler Garrow.
Despite a half a dozen shots in the game's final minute, Princeton couldn't solve Stirling, who stopped 18 shots in both the first and third periods. In comparison, the Tigers' Stathos stopped six shots in each period for a total of 18.
After a scoreless first period that saw Princeton dominate play, Tiger junior Ethan Doyle scored as Princeton held a 1-0 lead after two periods. Midway through the second Brad Parsons was setup behind the Brown net and fed Chris Corrinet along the boards. Corrinet sent a cross-ice pass to Doyle who was camped on Stirling's crease and knocked in his third goal of the season at 10:34. Jason Wilson's goal at 1:37 of the third period gave Brown some much-needed momentum. Wilson's wrap-around goal was his second of the year, and Michel Bent and Matt Kohansky collected the assists. Zielinski broke the 1-1 tie more than 11 minutes later.
The loss drops Princeton to 3-3-3 in ECAC action and 5-7-3 overall. The Tigers remain in a fourth-place tie with St. Lawrence with nine points. Brown improved to 2-7-0 in the conference and 3-9-0 overall as it moved from the ECAC cellar to 11th place.
Princeton will play at first-place Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live via the Internet at www.goprincetontigers.com. After an exam break, Princeton will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 23 when it hosts Lowell at 5 p.m. For additional ECAC hockey information log-on to http://hockey.ecac.com.
