Newark, N.J. - Princeton University and the United States Military Academy met on the gridiron in Newark, N.J. on Sunday afternoon, but this was not your average football game. These two teams played in the 22nd annual Pride Bowl, a football benefit put on by Project Pride Incorporated, which raises money for over 4,000 Newark youngsters.
Army was in the driver's seat early in the game as Gary Ducote scored a touchdown in the fifth minute of the game on a 39-yard scamper. The Black Knights set Pride Bowl records in yards rushing and total points scored.
While Army was obviously the better of the two teams, Princeton played hard for the duration of the contest. Their ability to keep trying to win even when the game was well out of reach is a true testament to their character.
Quarterback Geoff Gasperini connected with Ki Moon on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 17.7 seconds left in the first half, and Gasperini would score later on a 1-yard plunge as he was named Princeton's most valuable player. Princeton's Robin Clark rushed for an impressive 93 yards on 23 carries, which is the most rushing yards that Army's stellar sprint football team has given up in four years. Army's John Hall was named the Black Knight's most valuable player.
Princeton hosts Navy at Weaver Stadium at 7:30 on October 27th.
