Hanover, N.H. - In his second start of the year, goalie Nate Nomeland (Fargo, N.D.) stopped 40 shots as the Princeton men's hockey team shutout Dartmouth 6-0 in Thompson Arena.
It was Princeton's first shutout since March 6, 1999, when Nick Rankin '99 blanked Union. The Tigers' last shutout of Dartmouth was 9-0 at Baker Rink during the 1990-91 season.
The sophomore netminder, who started just two games last year, got his second start of the season. In his prior outing, Nomeland stopped 29 of 30 shots in a 1-1 tie against Niagara. He has stopped 69 of 70 shots this year, giving him a 0.48 goals-against average and a .986 save percentage.
"The hard thing with Dave (Stathos) is he seems to play well all time," said Nomeland when asked about playing behing Princeton's number-one goalie, "but he is probably my best friend on the team and he has always been supportive of me, and I always try to be the same back. We push each other in a very positive way and I thinks this is what helps me stay focused even when I know he's going to play." Nomeland played especially well early in the contest when Princeton was short-handed.
"Definitely," commented Nomeland on facing a number of good scoring chances early, "I'd rather face many shots from the perimeter, like I did tonight. The defense did an excellent job clearing screens and rebounds, so it was easy to get into the flow early. I think any goalie will tell you that some of your best games are when you face lots of shots, and some of your worst games tend to be when you face few. Getting active early is definitely the key to feeling well in the net."
Against the Big Green, Nomeland was especially strong in the second period when he turned away 17 shots. He was forced to make 12 saves in the opening period and 11 in the third.
Princeton's top two scorers, Chris Corrinet (Greenfield, Mass.) and Kirk Lamb (Cold Lake, Alberta), again provided the offensive punch at Dartmouth. Corrinet scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season, and Lamb added three assists. Defenseman Dave Bennett (Warwick, R.I.), who had two assists last year at Dartmouth, had a three-point night, assisting on three first-period goals.
Princeton broke open a scoreless game with three goals in the last 3:10 of the first period. Freshman defenseman Steve Slaton (Plymouth, Minn.) scored the first goal of his career at 16:50. Less than a minute later Brad Parsons (Kingston, Mass.) scored his fourth goal of the year, and Corrinet added his first of two at 19:35. Bennett and Lamb assisted on all three goals.
Dartmouth replaced starting goalie Darren Gastrock with Nick Boucher to begin the second period, but Ethan Doyle (Marblehead, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season at 6:45 to put the Tigers comfortably ahead at 4-0.
"Absoultely, "said Doyle about special scoring a goal shortly after a penalty-killing situation is, "I take a lot of pride in my defensive play, especially penalty killing. If I successfully kill a penalty I feel that I have done my job. If I am able to score while getting that job done it's a huge boost to the team."
Princeton added a pair of goals in the third period as Dave Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.) and Corrinet each scored. Freshman defenseman Matthew Maglione (Fayetteville, N.Y.) picked up the lone assist on both goals.
The victory boosts Len Quesnelle's Tigers to 2-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the ECAC. Dartmouth fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Vermont, which defeated Princeton 3-2 a night earlier, leads the ECAC. Princeton and Yale are tied for fifth and play each other twice in the upcoming week. The Tigers host Yale on Tuesday, Nov. 21 and travel to New Haven for a Saturday, Nov. 25 game. Both contests begin at 7 p.m.
