PRINCETON, N.J. - Ethan Doyle, Brad Parsons and Josh Roberts, all Massachusetts natives, each scored a goal as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Niagara 3-1 in the Tigers' season opener. The victory was the first for new Princeton head coach Len Quesnelle.
Parsons, a junior center and last year's leading goal scorer, scored the game-winner early in the third. Chris Corrinet, also a Massachusetts product, intercepted a Niagara clearing pass along the right wing boards and threw a perfect backhand pass onto the stick of Parsons, who as position just outside the goal crease. Parsons redirected the pass past Purple Eagle goaltender Scott Lindsay at 3:40 of the period.
"I thought we competed extremely hard," Quesnelle said of his first victory. "I didn't feel nervous, but I feel like I played the game tonight." Doyle opened the scoring with just five seconds remaining in the first period when he beat Lindsay high to the glove side. George Parros and Dave Bennett recorded the assists. Niagara's Hannu Karru tied the game at 1-1 just 36 seconds into the second period when he knocked in a rebound of a Bernie Sigrist shot. It was Karru's third goal of the season.
Parsons then scored what would be the eventual game-winner, but with Princeton clinging to a one-goal lead with less then three minutes remaining, goalie Dave Stathos made a tough pad save of a Scott Crawford shot from the slot.
Josh Roberts added an empty-net goal off an assist from David Schneider as Princeton avenged last year's 7-2 opening-game loss to Niagara.
"I still have last year's 7-2 loss on my heart," said Stathos, who made 30 saves, including 13 in the opening period. "It was key to break the ice with a win tonight, especially for a lot of the younger guys."
While it was Princeton's first game of the year, Niagara had played six prior games. "We're still in a training camp mode," Quesnelle said. The loss drops the Purple Eagles to 1-4-2.
With the departure of former coach Don Cahoon, the players have had to adapt to Quesnelle's style. "It's not a big adjustment for us," Parsons said. "He's done a great job."
Princeton played without captain Kirk Lamb, who is week-to-week with a knee injury. Shane Campbell, an assistant captain, also missed the game because of a death in the family. "Everyone did a good job filling the void for their absence," Quesnelle said.
Princeton and Niagara will play again Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. All Princeton games will be broadcast live via the Web at http://www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
