HAMILTON, N.Y. - Princeton overcame an early sluggish performance and a two-goal deficit to take a 7-4 victory against Colgate at Starr Rink. The win moves the Tigers into a first-place tie with Vermont in the ECAC.
Seniors Shane Campbell (Red Deer, Alberta) and Chris Corrinet (Greenfield, Mass.) each scored two goals as the Tigers erased Colgate's 4-2 lead midway through the second period.
Bob Vandersluis and Rob Brown scored in a 1:54 span to give the Red Raiders a two-goal advantage less than nine minutes into the second period. The lead was short lived, however, as Princeton answered with a pair of goals in less than a minute. Ethan Doyle (Marblehead, Mass.) scored his third of the season at 9:39 when he poked home a loose puck from in front of Colgate goalie Jason Lefevre. Brad Parsons (Kingston, Mass.) then found Campbell at the top of the crease, and he stuffed his own rebound past Lefevre to tie the game 4-4 at 10:31. Colgate's Cory Murphy was called for charging when he leveled Doyle along the left-wing boards at center ice at the 14-minute mark. Parsons responded by giving Princeton its first lead of the game when he was the recipient of a perfect passing play from freshman defenseman Steve Slaton (Plymouth, Minn.) and Corrinet. Working on the power play, Slaton had the puck on the left-wing boards and sent a pass to Corrinet at the left post. Corrinet tipped the pass to Parsons, who was alone at the right side of the crease and banged in his sixth goal of the season.
Princeton goalie Nate Nomeland (Fargo, N.D.), making his third start of the season, shut down Colgate in the third period, stopping all 10 Red Raider shots. Nomeland, who is 2-0-1 this year, stopped 26 shots in the game. Corrinet added some insurance when he scored a pair of third-period goals from the right face-off circle, his seventh and eighth tallies of the season.
Princeton raised its record to 4-2-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the ECAC and moved into a tie with Vermont for first place. A struggling Colgate team, which tied Michigan earlier in the year, fell to 2-9-2 and 1-4.
Colgate opened a 1-0 first-period lead when Sean Nolan deflected Bryan Long's shot past Nomeland at 5:41. Tiger defenseman David Schneider (Melrose Park, Ill.) answered a little more than a minute later. With the teams playing four-on-four, Schneider's shot deflected off a Red Raider defenseman and past Lefevre. It was his second of the season and second in the last two games.
Colgate regained the lead when Nolan found himself alone in the slot and scored his second of the game as he beat Nomeland high to the stick side at 10:45. Later in the period Campbell took a pass from Kirk Lamb (Cold Lake, Alberta) inside the Colgate blueline and walked down the slot and beat Lefevre high to the glove side at 15:36 to tie the game at 2-2.
In the second period the Red Raiders opened their two-goal lead when Vandersluis was untouched in the slot a found an opening between Nomelands' pads at 6:46. Two minutes later, while on the power play, Brown's wrist shot from the point deflected off a screened Nomeland to give Colgate a 4-2 lead.
Shortly thereafter, Princeton appeared to turn up its intensity and scored the game's final five goals.
The Tigers play at Cornell, Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. Princeton's next home games are Friday, Dec. 8 against Union and Saturday, Dec. 9 against RPI. Both games begin at 7 p.m., and tickets can be purchased by calling the Ticket Office at 609-258-3538.
