POTSDAM, N.Y. - Three first-period goals were enough for Clarkson as the Golden Knights defeated Princeton 5-2 in ECAC men's hockey at Cheel Arena.
Tiger sophomore goalie Dave Stathos yielded three goals on 13 shots in the first period and was replaced by freshman Nate Nomeland at the start of the second. Nomeland stopped 30 of 32 Clarkson shots, but Princeton could not overcome the game's first 20 minutes as it dropped its fourth straight game since the January exam break.
Princeton sophomore defenseman David Schneider opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:22 of the first period with assists from Benoit Morin and Kirk Lamb. It was Schneider's fifth goal of the year and fourth on the power play, which ties him with Brad Parsons and Chris Corrinet for the team lead. It was the fifth straight game that Princeton scored a power-play goal. Clarkson answered by scoring the next four goals, three before the first period ended. Matt Poapst scored his eighth of the season and first of two goals at 7:14 of the first. Less than three minutes later Chris Line scored his third of the year from an assist from Poapst. With Corrinet and teammate Peter Zavodny in the penalty box, Clarkson's David Evans scored the eventual game-winner on the power play at 15:44. It was Evans' fifth and team-leading third power-play goal.
Coach Don Cahoon replaced Stathos with Nomeland to begin the second period. Defenseman Kent Huskins scored early in the second, however, to give Clarkson a 4-1 lead.
Sophomore David Del Monte got the Tigers to within two goals when he scored an unassisted breakaway goal at 14:51. For the slick-skating Del Monte it was his fourth goal of the year and first shorthanded tally of his career.
Poapst squelched any momentum the Tigers may have had by scoring his second goal of the game when he knocked in a rebound from Dave Reid's shot at 2:22 of the third.
Princeton forced Clarkson freshman goalie Karl Mattson to make just 16 saves en route to his first career win. Princeton is tied with Union for seventh place in the ECAC standings with a 4-6-3 conference mark and a 6-11-3 overall record. Clarkson remains in 10th place, 3-6-3 in the ECAC and 8-11-3 overall.
Three Princeton players are tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points: Corrinet (7 goals - 11 assists), Lamb (4g - 14a) and Morin (4g - 14a).
Princeton looks to rebound tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 5) when it travels to ECAC-leader St. Lawrence, a 6-2 winner against Yale on Friday. The Tigers are 2-0 this season when facing teams that lead the ECAC standings.
Princeton's remaining home games are Sunday, Feb. 20 versus Dartmouth at 2 p.m., and a weekend series against Harvard and Brown on Feb. 25 and 26, respectively.
