PRINCETON, N.J. - Kim Smith (So., Balitmore, Md.) scored four goals as the No. 9 Princeton Tigers upset the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils 11-10 tonight in women's lacrosse action at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Duke scored three goals in the final six minutes, but key saves by Princeton goalie Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) preserved the win.
The Tigers got on the board first when Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) took a pass from Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) and went straight to goal for her second tally of the season. Goals by Smith and Lauren Simone (So., Delran, N.J.) gave Princeton a 3-0 lead with 17:12 remaining in the first half. Duke rallied to score three consecutive goals, including a score from Tricia Martin with 11:02 left, to knot the score at 3-3. Freshman Racheal Becker (Broomall, Pa.) put the Tigers ahead, when she took a ground ball and went coast to coast for her first goal collegiate goal. Both teams traded goals in the final six minutes, and Princeton led 5-4 at halftime. Just 28 seconds after intermission, Duke evened the issue at five all on a goal by Kate Kiser off an assist from Martin. The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 22:38 to play on a goal by Martin. That only proved to spark the Tigers, who scored five unanswered goals, including three by Smith, to take an 11-7 lead with 9:43 on the clock.
Duke refused to roll over, and the Blue Devils put together a string of three straight goals, cutting the lead to 11-10 with 1:45 on the clock. The Tiger defense held tough, and Field made two crucial saves in the final minutes for the one-goal victory.
Behind Smith's four goals, Kenworthy and Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) each scored twice. Simone, who leads the Tigers with nine points this season, found the back of the net once. Freshmen Becker and Whitney Miller (Bishopville, Md.) each scored one goal.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, March 18, as they host the No. 6 Georgetown Hoyas. Game time is set for 1:00 pm and will be played in Princeton Stadium, weather permitting.
