PRINCETON, N.J. - For the first time in history, the men's and women's fencing team will send 12 fencers to this year's NCAA championship. For a team to have a realistic shot at the national title, it must qualify the maximum number of fencers, which is now 12 after women's sabre was added as an official weapon. Princeton will have two athletes competing in each of the six weapons.
"Since this is the first year with this format, we will begin the new millennium with 12 qualifiers," head coach Michel Sebastiani says. "We are very excited, especially since this is the first year we will send the maximum number of fencers possible."
Five-time defending national champion Penn State qualified 12 fencers, as well as Notre Dame and the host Cardinals.
A total of 144 fencers will compete in this year's championship, each with 23 bouts (five-touch) in a round-robin format. The top four fencers after the round-robin competition will fence direct elimination (15-touch) for first, second, third and fourth place.
Competition begins on Thursday, March 23, at Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University and concludes on Sunday, March 26. The Tigers hope to improve on last year's fourth place finish.
