PRINCETON, N.J. - Julie Shaner (Jr., Gywnedd Valley, Pa.) scored three goals and added one assist as the ninth-ranked Tigers outlasted the No. 6 Georgetown Hoyas for an 8-6 victory in women's lacrosse action at the Class of 1952 Stadium this afternoon. Six other Princeton players registered at least one point in the game.
Princeton improves to 3-1 on the year, while Georgetown suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 4-1 overall.
Shaner got Princeton on the board first with a goal just 3:45 into the first half. The Hoyas tied the score at one all on a free position goal by Kristen Baer (Sr., Norristown, Pa.) at the 5:32 mark. The Tigers proceeded to score four unanswered, including two by goals by Shaner, for a 5-1 lead with 1:32 left on the clock. The Hoyas tacked on a goal by Kate Ahern (So., Balitmore, Md.) with 3.1 seconds on the clock to cut Princeton's lead to 5-2 at halftime.
That score would remain the same until Georgetown's Sheehan Stanwick (So., Baltimore, Md.) took a pass from Sarah Oglesby (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) and found the back to the net at 42:23. With Princeton leading 6-4, co-captain Hilary Maddox (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) took a pass from Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) and scored her third goal of the year with 12:25 remaining in the game. A free position goal by Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) gave the Tigers an 8-4 lead with 9:08 to play. The Hoyas had one last rally, scoring two goals in two minutes to cut the Princeton advantage to 8-6 with 4:48 on the clock. The Tigers possessed the ball for much of the final minutes and held on for the two-goal victory.
Georgetown's head coach Kim Simons '94 won 22 games at Old Nassau while playing for the Tigers, but has yet to register a win with the Hoyas in Princeton. The Tigers are 3-0 against Georgetown at home.
The Tigers will return to action on Wednesday, March 22, as they open Ivy League play at Columbia beginning at 4 p.m.
