NEW YORK, N.Y. - For the women's lacrosse team, a win in the Ivy League opener against Columbia this afternoon in at Wien Stadium would have been satisfying. The Tigers got a little more than they expected, as Princeton recorded the first-ever shutout in the program's 27-year history with an 18-0 rout of the Lions.
The Tigers dominated the less skilled Lions from the start. Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) got Princeton on the board just 55 second into the game when she scored off an assist from freshman Whitney Miller (Bishopville, Md.). A pair of goals by Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) and one by Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead with less than five minutes expired in the opening half. Miller scored her third goal of the season at the 11:12 mark of the first half and later added her second assist of the game on a goal by Smith.
With the Orange and Black leading 8-0, Kenworthy scored her second goal of the game with 1:20 to play in the half. A mere fourteen seconds later the Tigers held a double-digit lead on Lauren Simone's (So., Delran, N.J.) first goal of the day, giving Princeton a 10-0 advantage at halftime. Simone picked up right where she left off, scoring the first three Princeton goals after intermission for a 13-0 lead with 12:58 to play. Freshman Summer Crabtree (Alexandria, Va.) scored her first collegiate goal with 4:25 remaining. To add insult to injury, Crabtree took a pass from classmate Liza Hillenbrand (Fr., Sumit, N.J.) and scored goal No. 18 with just seven seconds left on the clock.
Princeton's goalies were not given much a challenge, as the Tigers outshot the Lions 32-7. Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) registered five saves in the first half. Back-up Jennie Platt (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.), who was playing in her first collegiate lacrosse game, recorded two saves in 30 minutes of action.
Smith led the Tigers with five goals, while Simone added four more. Shaner, Kenworthy, Hammerberg and Crabtree each found the back of the net twice. Miller added one goal and two assists, and Hillenbrand had two assists.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, March 25, and attempt to avenge last year's NCAA quarterfinal loss as they face Penn State at 1 p.m. at University Park.
