UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Revenge is sweet. After Penn State knocked the Tigers out of the NCAA tournament last season with a 9-7 overtime win at Old Nassau, the Princeton women's lacrosse team finally got its chance at a little payback. The Tigers exploded for 12 goals in the first half en route to a 19-8 victory this afternoon at Jeffery Field in University Park.
Princeton jumped out to a 7-0 lead with only 10 minutes expired in the first half, sparked by four goals by Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.). Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) and Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) each tallied two goals in the first half for the Tigers.
The Nittany Lions scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to five, but Kenworthy found the back of the net once and assisted on Hilary Maddox's (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) fourth goal of the year to give Princeton a 9-2 lead with 11:27 on the clock. Kenworthy scored with three seconds remaining in the half to give the Tigers a 12-3 lead at the break.
The Tigers scored the first three goals after intermission, including two by freshman Liza Hillenbrand (Summitt, N.J.) before Penn State's B. J. Lucey tallied her third goal of the day with 17:35 to play. Sarah Small (Fr., Rumford, R.I.) and Jen Gray (Jr., Parkton, Md.) each scored their first goal of the season in the second half.
Last week's Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) turned away six Nittany Lion shots, while Jennie Platt (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) made two saves in 10 minutes of play.
The Tigers are now 5-1 on the year and will return to action on Friday, March 31, as they host No. 3 Virginia at 3 p.m. at Princeton Stadium.
