Tigers Finish Fifth At NCAA Fencing Championship

PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The Princeton men's and women's fencing team finished fifth at the 2000 NCAA Championships this weekend at Stanford. The Tigers won 133 bouts in the four-day competition, while Penn State won its sixth consecutive national title. Princeton had the highest finish among Ivy schools, with Columbia, Yale and Penn claiming places six through eight, respectively.
With the women's competition complete on Friday, only the men were in action on Saturday and Sunday. Captain Jason Burrell (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) won 17 ?p?e bouts, which placed him in a tie for third with three other fencers on number of total victories. Burrell had the lowest margin on indicators, leaving him in sixth place overall. Classmate Steven Wang (Sr., Morristown, N.J.) finished No. 19 in the ?p?e event.
Princeton placed two fencers in the top 15 in sabre competition, with James Wallen (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) ending a sensational freshman campaign with a twelfth-place finish. Freshman Daniel Pratt (Granger, Tenn.) won eight bouts en route to a fifteenth-place finish.
Dustin Reagan (Jr., Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Aaron Filner (Sr., New York, N.Y.) finished No. 17 and No. 18, respectively, in the foil weapon.
