Charlotte Kenworthy scored three goals, including a bullet midway through the second half to put her team ahead for good, to lead Princeton to an 8-7 win over Virginia in a women's lacrosse game at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
The second-ranked Tigers improved to 6-1 on the season with their fifth-straight win, while No. 8 UVa fell to 6-3. Princeton hosts Cornell Sunday afternoon, while the Cavaliers complete their northern swing Saturday afternoon at Temple.
Princeton and Virginia have now split their 14 all-time meetings.
Kenworthy, who came into the game with nine goals in six games, scored the first goal of the day 1:24 into the game. Her second evened the score at 2-2 later in the first half, and her third snapped a 6-6 tie with 15:55 to play in the game and put Princeton ahead for good.
Lauren Simone then added her second goal of the day with 10 minutes to play to make it 8-6 Princeton before Kelly Allenbach cut it to 8-7 with 6:04 left. UVa would have one more good offensive chance the rest of the way, as the Tigers were able to maintain possession for most of the remaining six minutes. The game was tight throughout, as neither team ever led by more than two. Maddox scored on a feed from Simone to even it at 5-5 with 47 seconds remaining before intermission after UVa had leads of 4-2 and 5-3.
Jamie Haas scored her second goal of the game to put Virginia back on top 6-5 six minutes into the second half, but Princeton put together three straight to take command. Kim Smith's second knotted it at 6-6, setting the stage for Kenworthy to beat Virginia's Francis Segarra with a blast from the left side.
Princeton outshot Virginia 20-18. Segarra made 13 saves for the Cavs, while Laura Field made 10 for the Tigers.
