HAMILTON, N.Y. - Princeton entered the final regular-season weekend of ECAC hockey action needing a win and tie to guarantee home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Princeton took one step toward that goal by tying Colgate 2-2 at Starr Rink.
The teams were tied at 1-1 entering the third period as Princeton held Colgate to just 11 shots during the first two periods. Cory Murphy restored the Red Raiders' one-goal advantage when he scored on the power play at 6:28 to give Colgate a 2-1 lead.
Brad Parsons scored the game-tying goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the third period. Ethan Doyle and freshman defenseman Neil McCann picked up the assists. It was Parson's team-leading 11th goal.
Neither Princeton goalie Dave Stathos nor Colgate netminder Shep Harder would yield another goal. The Tigers had the better of the play in overtime, registering three shots to the Red Raiders' zero. Princeton outshot Colgate, which was vying for the ECAC regular-season championship with St. Lawrence, 34-25. "In general I thought that this was a really good college hockey game," said Princeton coach Don Cahoon. "There was good goaltending, an offensive flow and a strong commitment by both teams."
Colgate opened the scoring when Andy McDonald notched a power-play goal at 15:13 of the first period. Tiger freshman George Parros scored his third goal of the season and first since Nov. 23 at 16:09 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Scott Prime received the only assist, his third of the year.
Princeton has a .500 winning percentage in ECAC games with an 8-8-4 mark and is 10-13-4 overall. Colgate is 13-4-2 in the conference and 20-7-2 overall.
In this tight ECAC race, the Princeton - Colgate tie had far-reaching ramifications. Princeton dropped from a four-way tie for third place to a three-way tie for fifth with Cornell and Harvard. Princeton will play at Cornell on Saturday, March 4. The tie also gave the regular-season title to St. Lawrence, with Colgate entrenched as the conference's No. 2 team. Currently Clarkson and RPI share third place. At season's end the top five teams will host a first-round, best-of-three series.
In order to guarantee home ice for the playoffs that begin Friday, March 10, Princeton needs to defeat Cornell. If the Tigers and Big Red skate to a tie, playoff positioning will be impacted by the results of Saturday's other games and most likely will involve some aspect of the ECAC's tie-breaking formula.
The season finale has added significance for Princeton. Not only would a win in Ithaca secure the Tigers home ice in the playoffs, but it also would give them the Ivy League title for the second consecutive year. A tie at Cornell would yield a shared Ivy championship with Harvard, and a loss would mean no home ice and no Ivy title. Last year Princeton won its first Ivy League championship since 1953.
