NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Princeton men's and women's fencing team successfully defended its overall team title, edging second-place St. John's for the six-weapon title this weekend at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championship in New Haven. The Tigers posted 167 total victories, just three more than the Red Storm.
The women's team won the foil and ?p?e squad titles en route to the overall team and three-weapon title. St. John's won the women's and men's sabre squad titles, as well as the men's ?p?e and three-weapon team title. Columbia won the men's foil to round out the squad winners.
In the individual competition on Sunday, Princeton had two fencers place in the top three, ironically in the same weapon. Freshman Mindy Rostal (Maplewood, Minn.) finished second in the foil event, while classmate Eva Petschnigg (Koblenz, Germany) finished third.
Selected members of each team will begin NCAA regional competition on March 12, at Penn State.
