ITHACA, N.Y. - In a fight for home-ice advantage in the ECAC playoffs and an Ivy League title, the Princeton men's hockey team came from behind on three occasions at Cornell. The Tigers couldn't counter Denis Ladouceur's goal midway through the third period, however, and fell 5-3 at Lynah Rink.
The loss drops Princeton to sixth place in the ECAC final regular-season standings, which means the Tigers will open the playoffs Friday night at fifth-place Clarkson's Cheel Arena. Princeton finished 8-9-4 in ECAC play (10-14-4 overall), while the Golden Knights were 9-8-3 in the conference (15-14-3 overall). Princeton and Clarkson skated to a 3-3 tie in Princeton in early November, and the Knights took a 5-2 game in Potsdam the first week of February.
Against Cornell (13-12-2 overall, 10-9-1 ECAC), the Tigers fell behind 1-0 after Dan Svoboda's first-period goal. Tiger freshman George Parros responded with a power-play tally at 1:51 of the second period, with assists going to Benoit Morin and Kirk Lamb. It was Parros' fourth of the season and second goal of the weekend. Defenseman Larry Pierce scored his first of two goals at 14:11 to give Cornell a 2-1 lead. Less than four minutes later and with Cornell on the power play, Morin stole the puck from defenseman Rick Sacchetti and beat Big Red goalie Ian Burt on a shorthanded breakaway to tie the game at 2-2. Morin's unassisted goal was his ninth of the year and second shorthanded goal of his career.
The Tigers' Shane Campbell received a roughing penalty at 17:52 of the second period. While playing shorthanded, defenseman Peter Zavodny received a delay of game penalty for covering the puck in the crease, which resulted in a penalty shot with 20 seconds remaining in the period. Ryan Moynihan could not convert against goalie Dave Stathos, however, and the Tigers were clinging to a 2-2 tie.
The momentum of Morin's goal and Cornell's failed penalty shot was short-lived. Pierce scored his second of the game with just nine seconds remaining in the period and one second before Campbell's penalty was to expire. The power-play goal gave Cornell another one-goal lead, 3-2, as the Big Red had outshot the Tigers 28-13 heading into the third period.
Princeton responded again. This time it was Campbell scoring his eighth of the season from freshman defenseman Trevor Beaney and senior forward Brad Meredith at 6:15 of the third. Ladouceur's game-winner came slightly more than six minutes later, and this time the Tigers didn't have any answer. With Stathos pulled in favor of a sixth attached, Cornell's Mike Rutter scored into an empty net halting Princeton's thoughts of another comeback.
