PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Lauren Simone (Delran, N.J.) scored four goals and added two assists as the women's lacrosse team edged No. 18 Temple at Geasey Field in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win Princeton improves to 10-1 on the year and has won nine consecutive games dating back to March 15. The Owls fall to an even 5-5 on the year.
Princeton jumped out to a 4-0 lead with 9:27 expired in the first half on two goals by Simone and one each by Whitney Miller (Fr., Bishopville, Md.) and Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.). The Owls answered with three goals of their own to draw within a goal at 4-3 with 13:12 remaining in the first half. The Tigers regained the two-goal lead when Hilary Maddox (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) took a pass from Shaner and scored her 11th goal of the season with just more than 10 minutes on the clock.
The game saw ties at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7 before a goal by Miller with 3:57 remaining gave Princeton an 8-7 advantage at halftime. The Tigers scored back-to-back goals to open the second half and built a 10-7 lead at the 34:43 mark. After a Temple goal, Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) and Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) each found the back of the net for a 12-8 Princeton lead with 17 minutes to play.
Over the next six minutes Temple would put two more goals in the board to cut the deficit to two with 10:11 remaining in the game. Princeton picked up the defensive pressure, holding the Owls in check for the remainder of the game. For good measure, Simone scored her fourth goal of the day with 4:51 to play for the 13-10 final score.
Simone led the all scorers with four goals and two assists, while Shaner and Maddox each had two goals and two assists. Miller scored twice and added one assist. Smith and Hammerberg also tallied goals for the Tigers.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 15, as they travel to Ivy foe Harvard for a noon contest in Cambridge.
