PRINCETON, N.J. - Twenty-two Tigers saw action and 12 recorded at least one point as the women's lacrosse team defeated Pennsylvania 19-4 this afternoon at Princeton Stadium. Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) led the way with three goals and one assist.
The Tigers are now 12-1 on the year and improve to 5-0 in Ivy League play. Penn falls to 5-6 overall, 1-5 Ivy.
Whitney Miller (Fr., Bishopville, Md.) put the Tigers on the board first on a goal at the 6:05 mark, before Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) and Shaner each scored for a 3-0 Princeton lead with 8:51 expired in the opening half. Whitney Horton notched Penn's first goal on an assist from Traci Marabella at the 10:51 mark. The Tigers reeled off four unanswered goals, including two by Hilary Maddox (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) to take a 7-1 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Back-to-back goals by the Quakers brought the score to 7-3 before Princeton found the back of the net three times in the final eight minutes to send the Tigers into the lockerroom leading 10-3 at the break. The second half saw much of the same as the Tiger defense held Penn scoreless for the first 25:47 after intermission. In that span the Tigers scored six goals, including two by freshman Liza Hillenbrand (Summit, N.J.), for a 17-3 advantage. Brooke Jenkins scored the Quakers' only goal of the second half with 4:13 on the clock. Jen Gray (Jr., Parkton, Md.) and Melissa Deland (So., Washington, D.C.) each scored goals in the final two minutes for the 19-4 final score.
Shaner, Maddox and Kenworthy each scored three goals, while Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.), Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) and Miller each scored twice. Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) and Jennie Platt (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) combined for 11 saves in Princeton's 11th straight win.
The Tigers return to the field on Saturday, April 22, as they host Dartmouth in a battle of the only two undefeated Ivy League teams. Action begins at 1 p.m. in Princeton Stadium.
