PRINCETON, N.J. - Dartmouth scored the last six goals of the game, including two by Jacque Weitzel, en route to a 16-13 overtime victory this afternoon in women's lacrosse action at Princeton Stadium. The win gave the Big Green its fourth consecutive Ivy League crown, fifth in six years, and the league's automatic bid in the NCAA tournament.
The Tigers are now 12-2 on the year and 5-1 in Ivy League play. Dartmouth improves to 11-1 on the year and finish with a perfect 7-0 record in the league. The loss snapped Princeton's 11-game win streak that began on March 15.
Dartmouth did not take long to open scoring, as Weitzel--the nation's leading goal scorer--took a pass from Kate Graw and scored her 52nd goal of the year with only 27 seconds expired in the first half. Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) put the Tigers on the board with a free position goal at the 5:01 mark. The game saw ties at 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4 before freshman Whitney Miller (Bishopville, Md.) put Princeton ahead 5-4 with nine minutes on the clock. Lauren Simone (So., Delran, N.J.), who missed the last three games with an ankle injury, scored her third goal of the day off an assist from Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) with under five minutes to play in the half. The Tigers got a little help extending their lead when what looked to be a clean save by Dartmouth goalie Sarah Hughes found its way to the back of the net. Hughes made a save on a free position shot by Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.), but a check by Kenworthy knocked the ball in the goal for a 7-4 Princeton lead heading into the break.
Dartmouth's two leading scorers, Weitzel and Graw, who rank 3-4 nationally in overall scoring, tallied back-to-back goals after intermission to draw the Big Green to within one goal at 7-6 at the 35:27 mark. Simone gave Princeton a two goal-advantage just more than a minute later, when she poked home her 32nd goal of the year between Hughes and the left post. Both teams traded goals before scores by Weitzel and Jen Newitt knotted the score at 9-9 with 17:40 to play.
Over the next nine minutes Kenworthy exploded for three unanswered goals to give the Orange and Black a 12-9 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. With Princeton leading 13-10 with less than two minutes to play, a free position goal by Weitzel ignited a Dartmouth rally. A goal by Alison Moulin brought the Big Green to within one at 13-12 with 1:18 on the clock, and Amy Zimmer scored her third goal of the game with 14 seconds remaining to tie the score at 13-all. Dartmouth won the draw and had one last chance to win in regulation, but a caused turnover by Molly Hall (Sr., Bernardsville, N.J.) in the final seconds sent the game into overtime knotted at 13-13.
Weitzel gave Dartmouth its first lead since the opening minutes when she took a pass from Suzy Gibbons and fired a shot past Tiger keeper Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) 48 seconds into the first of two three-minute overtime periods. Liz Merritt scored with 10 seconds remaining in the extra session and again in the second overtime for the 16-13 final score.
"We played a great 58 minutes, and [Dartmouth] came on with fire," head coach Chris Sailer said. "Some of their upperclassmen really turned it on at the end of the game, and that was the difference."
Princeton was led in scoring by Simone and Kenworthy, each scoring five goals. Smith scored twice and Miller found the back of the net once and recorded two assists. Weitzel led Dartmouth with five goals and two assists.
The Tigers return to the field on Wednesday, April 26, as they host the No. 1 team in the nation, the Maryland Terrapins, at 7 p.m. in Princeton Stadium.
