PRINCETON, N.J. - Maryland's Allison Comito scored four goals and assisted on two more as the No. 1 Terrapins defeated Princeton 14-6 in women's lacrosse action tonight at Princeton Stadium. Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) led the Tigers with three goals and one assist.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 12-3 on the year, while Maryland improves to 16-1.
After Maryland got on the board just 1:22 into the game on a goal by Kristin Sommar, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead on goals by Shaner and Hilary Maddox (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) at the 5:44 mark. Over the next 23 minutes, the Terrapins would score five unanswered goals, including two by Comito, to take a 6-2 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Shaner ended Princeton's scoring drought with her second goal of the game at the 28:25 mark.
Less than a minute later Shaner assisted Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) on her 29th goal of the season with 58 seconds on the clock. Maryland regained momentum heading into the break when Comito scored off an assist from Quinn Carney with 14 seconds remaining for a 7-4 Maryland lead at halftime. Four straight Maryland goals, by four different Terrapins, after intermission left Princeton trailing 11-4 with 14:08 to play. The Tigers had several good scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of then net. After Comito's fourth goals of the night, Maddox won the draw and went straight to goal, scoring her 18th goal of the season. Shaner would add a goal at the 51:50 mark to round out the Princeton scoring.
Maryland's Jen Adams, who currently leads the nation in scoring with 101 points, was held scoreless for the first 47:34 of the game. The Australia native tallied the last three Terrapin goals for the 14-6 final score.
"We didn't come through on the attack," head coach Chris Sailer said. "We had a lot of opportunities, especially early. We had 27 shots and only three goals, that's not very effective."
In her final appearance in Princeton Stadium, Laura Field (Sr., Mystic, Conn.) made seven saves. Maryland's Alex Kehoe turned away 11 Tiger shots in the victory.
"I hope they don't get any better than that," Sailer said. "They were overwhelming on attack. They had such great sticks, vision and very hard shots."
Shaner led the Tigers with three goals and one assist, while Maddox found the back of the net twice. Kenworthy scored one goal, and Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) added one assist. Behind Comito's four goals and Adam's three, Carney, Sommar and Meg McNamara each scored twice for the Terrapins. Carney and Christie Jenkins each had three assists.
The Tigers return to the field on Saturday, April 29, as they travel to Providence for a 1 p.m. game at Brown. The Terrapins round out their season at Loyola on Saturday.
