PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Kim Smith (Baltimore, Md.) keyed a late second-half rally with a goal and three assists, and the Tigers had five players score two goals each as No. 2 Princeton held off No. 17 Cornell for a 12-7 win in Ivy League women's lacrosse action at the Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The visiting Big Red gave the Tigers a scare early in the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 4:25. Jamiee Reynolds opened the scoring with just 36 seconds off the clock and then staked Cornell to a 2-0 advantage with her second of three goals on the day at the four-minute mark. Erica Holveck increased the lead to 3-0 before the Tigers took a time out.
"Cornell came out ready to play,"said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "I've got to give a lot of credit to them. They came out hard."
Princeton came out of the stoppage rejuvenated, rallying to tie the game at 11:45 and take the lead just moments later. It was a lead that the Tigers would not relinquish. Lauren Simone (So., Delran, N.J.) scored two goals to bring Princeton within one before Whitney Miller (Fr., Bishopville, Md.) found the back of the net twice within eight seconds to set the score at 4-3. The Tigers continued to move the ball quickly into the Cornell zone and built up a 6-3 advantage within no time. Goals by Mimi Hammerberg (So., Denver, Colo.) and Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.) completed a six-goal run and capped a 45-second, four-goal outburst by the Tigers. Cornell trimmed Princeton's lead to two goals before intermission as Ginny Miles picked up a goal and an assist for the Big Red, including a nice pass to Reynolds with less than a minute to play before the two teams headed for the locker rooms.
The early part of the second half was marked by tight defense on both ends of the field, and Cornell looked to dictate the momentum with a goal in the opening minutes. Miles scored her second of the day for the Big Red at 2:40, but Princeton answered back when Hilary Maddox (Sr., Chestnut Hill, Mass.) followed her own shot and put home the rebound at 4:43. Cornell again came within one on a goal by Sarah Averson, and the Big Red relied on steady defense and a strong goaltending effort by sophomore Carrie Giancola to keep them in the game. Giancola made several key saves in the second half, but was overwhelmed by the Tiger offense in the final ten minutes.
Smith, Princeton's top offensive threat, had been kept off the scoresheet for the first 50 minutes of the contest before setting up a three of the Tigers' final four goals and scoring the other. Maddox picked up her second goal of the day off a feed from Smith at 21:04 to give Princeton a two-goal lead, and Smith continued the run with assists on goals by Hammerberg and Nina Carbone (So. Carle Place, N.Y.).
The Tiger defense did the rest, holding Cornell scoreless for the final 17 minutes. Senior Laura Field (Mystic, Conn.) made eight saves in goal for the Tigers, while Giancola had 15 stops for the Big Red.
"We didn't play our best," said Sailer, "but we had a good stretch in the first half and another at the end of the second. We're not really pleased with the effort, we need to regroup, since we have some tough games coming up this week. But, we did get the "W," and that's what's important in these Ivy games."
Princeton returns to action on Wednesday night as the Tigers continue a four-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game against Delaware at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
