PRINCETON, N.J. - Kim Smith (So., Baltimore, Md.) scored six goals, and Lauren Simone (So., Delran, N.J.) tallied four more as the second-ranked Tigers topped No. 7 Delaware 17-5 in women's lacrosse action tonight in a bitter cold Class of 1952 Stadium.
With the win Princeton improves to 8-1 on the year and has won seven consecutive games dating back to March 15. The Tigers handed Delaware its first loss of the year as the Blue Hens are now 8-1.
Princeton jumped out to a 3-0 lead, sparked by two goals by Smith, with less that five minutes expired in the first half. Back-to-back goals by Delaware drew the Blue Hens to within one with 23:16 remaining, but the Tigers would reel off four consecutive goals, including two by Charlotte Kenworthy (So., Frazier, Pa.), to take a 7-2 lead with 16:42 on the clock.
Delaware's Corinne Shuck scored with just more than 10 minutes remaining in the half to snap a 13-minute scoring drought for the Blue Hens. Both Whitney Miller (Fr., Bishopville, Md.) and Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) scored in the final 9:47 as the Tigers took a 10-3 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. Smith led the Tigers with four goals at the break. Princeton's defense took control in the second half, holding the Blue Hens scoreless for the first 23:48 after intermission. The offense did its part, scoring six goals in that span to take a 16-3 lead on Simone's fourth goal of the day. Delaware's Christy Buck scored her 16th goal of the season with 3:48 to play, but the damage had already been done. Freshman Sarah Small (Rumford, R.I.) scored her second goal of the game with less than two minutes to play, and Shuck scored her second goal with one second on the clock for the 17-5 final score.
The stingy Tiger defense held Delaware, which averaged 16.12 goals per game coming into tonight's contest, to only five goals--its lowest total of the year--and leading scorer Sarah Edwards, who has tallied 32 goals in the year, managed only one assist in the game. Goalie Laura Field (Sr., Mystic., Conn.) was tremendous in the net, turning away eight Blue Hen shots in 48 minutes of action. Back-up Jennie Platt (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) made one save in the final 12 minutes.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 8, as they host Ivy foe Yale at 2 p.m. in the Class of 1952 Stadium.
