PRINCETON, N.J. - For the third time in her career, Princeton women's lacrosse head coach Chris Sailer has been named the Division I National Coach of the Year. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced the 2000 regional and national coaches of the year for their outstanding contributions this season.
After losing eight seniors, including seven starters, in 1999--the largest graduating class in at least 13 years at Princeton--Sailer guided a young team to the NCAA title game this season. The Tigers, which boasted eight freshmen and sophomores in the starting line-up, were 15-4 overall in 2000, including an 11-game winning streak, and set a University record for goals scored in a season. The Orange and Black finished the regular season with a 13-3 mark and a No. 2 ranking. As the second seed, Princeton received a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament and picked up wins over Duke and James Madison to advance to the national final.
Sailer is 39-13 over the last three seasons and has amassed a 166-61 record (.731) in 14 years as head coach. A 1981 graduate of Harvard, Sailer was honored as the 1993 and 1994 Division I Coach of the Year and the Regional Coach of the Year from 1992-1994.
The IWLCA Coaches of the Year honors are selected by vote of the membership.
