Princeton, N.J. - Both Brown and Princeton entered Saturday night's contest desperate to put an end to losing streaks, but the Bears left Baker Rink with the 5-3 victory. The Tigers, obviously frustrated with their eighth consecutive loss, head into the three-week final exam period searching for the elixir that can help them get back into the win column.
Brown defenseman Josh Barker scored the only goal of the first period at 13:48, as he was the beneficiary of considerable traffic in front of Princeton netminder, Dave Stathos.
David Schneider would score his fourth goal of the season halfway through the second period when freshman Drew Morrison found him wide open in the slot. Schneider accepted the pass, and blew a slap shot by Brown's Yann Davis. The goal was Schneider's second this weekend, and Morrison received the only assist. Brown's J-F Labarre put the Bears up 2-1 just three minutes later in the second period. Stathos did not have a chance, because Labarre made an incredible move to pull the Princeton goaltender to one corner of the net. Stathos, who made the right play when he took away Labarre's first option, could only watch as the skilled and hard-working left wing pulled the string and sent the puck into the back of the Princeton net.
Brown's Matt Kohansky took advantage of a strange bounce off the end boards to score a power-play goal at 5:04 of the third period. Brown's Paul Esdale fired a wrist shot over the Princeton net, and the puck came directly out to Kohansky in the slot, which beat Stathos high.
The Tigers may not be winning games right now, but it would be unfair to say that the losing streak can be attributed to not working hard. Assistant captain Chris Corrinet scored his eleventh goal of the season off of a rebound on the left side of the crease. Captain Kirk Lamb fed junior Brad Parsons from behind the net, and Corrinet was down low to pounce on the puck that Yann Davis could not coral.
Princeton's other assistant captain, senior Shane Campbell, evened the score halfway through the period as a result of an impressive fore-checking job by line mates Ethan Doyle and Josh Roberts.
Momentum appeared to be on the Tigers' side, but Brown's Tye Korbl would score the game-winning goal with just over two minutes to go. Princeton's aggressiveness on the offensive end hurt them again this weekend, as Korbl and Jason Wilson were able to mount a two-on-one break after chipping the puck by Tiger defenseman. Korbl, who put a professional-caliber move on Stathos, beat the goalie high and to the glove side before coasting into the boards. Doug Janjevich would score an empty-net goal to clinch the game at 18:50 of the third period, and would send a deflated Princeton team with its eighth consecutive loss to the dressing room.
Brown won just its third game of the season, and played a more desperate brand of hockey than the Tigers. The loss also marks the third time this season that the Tigers have lost a game when having more shots than its opponent. Princeton has yet to win a game when outshooting an opponent.
"I don't think that we were outworked, but you have to give credit to Brown, because they played with a real sense urgency tonight, " commented a dejected Campbell after the game.
The Tigers will be off for the next three weeks as they take their first-semester final exams, and will not play again until Friday Feb. 2nd at St. Lawrence. The second game of the road trip, which is against Clarkson, will be televised live by NESN at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 3, 2001. The satellite coordinates for the game is Satellite GE2, Transponder 15.
