Princeton, N.J. - Coming off of an 8-3 shellacking at the hands of the Bowling Green Falcons on Friday night, the Princeton Tigers knew that they had to play with more intensity in the second game of the two-game series. While it was obvious that Princeton played harder on Saturday night, Bowling Green's size, strength, excellent goaltending and scrappy play were too much for the Tigers to handle as the Falcons won 5-0. The loss increased Princeton's season-long losing streak to six games.
Bowling Green's Curtis Valentine opened the scoring at 2:34 of the first period with a power-play goal, which was assisted by Marc Barlow and Austin de Luis. Grady Moore scored another power-play marker at 14:57 off of clean face-off win by Greg Day.
Ryan Murphy, the son of a former professional player and coach, tallied his eleventh goal of the season just 53 seconds into the second period, and Bowling Green would add two goals in the third period to finish off the game's scoring. Princeton's highlight of the game came in the third period when freshman Tommy Colclough crushed Grady Moore in the corner. The hit was legal, and was a textbook example of how to properly hit an opponent. While this did not help the Tigers score a goal, it is proof that the players are still giving everything they have in this frustrating slump.
"We have players trying to do too much, players not doing enough and we need to go back to fundamentals in the next week of practice, " commented a frustrated captain Kirk Lamb after the shutout loss.
"The biggest thing that we need to do now is change our mindset, " offered Princeton coach Len Quesnelle, who thought his team played with a lot more vigor in tonight's contest.
Bowling Green goalie Tyler Masters stopped 40 shots as he took away a number of Princeton scoring chances.
The Tigers host Harvard and Brown next Friday Jan. 12th and Saturday Jan. 13th at Baker Rink. Starting times for both games are 7:00 p.m.
