PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) scored twice in the second half to lead Princeton (10-2, 3-0 Ivy) to a 3-2 win over Connecticut (5-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) opened the scoring with a goal at 16:12 of the first half off of an assist from sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.). That turned out to be the only score of the period as Princeton took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Huskies tied the game at 1-1 at 20:35 of the second half on a goal by Megan Ware off of an assist from Lauren Henderson. The Tigers bounced right back to regain the lead at 19:00 when Becker gathered a pass from freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) and rifled a shot into the back of the cage to give Princeton a 2-1 edge. Connecticut fought back again to tie the score at 2-2. Kelly Stolle got a pass down to Amy Marland, who was positioned to the left of the cage, and was able to get the ball into the back of the goal for the Huskies second score of the day.
Princeton once again had the answer as Becker collected a pass from junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) on a breakaway and was able to bring the ball into the circle and get a shot past the Huskies' netminder for a 3-2 Tigers win.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) had two saves in the game as Princeton held a 25-11 shot advantage. Maureen Butler had a solid game in goal for Connecticut, finishing with eight saves.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they travel to face Harvard at noon. Princeton will then play Boston University on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. before returning home to host Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.
