Cambridge, Mass. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) scored twice to lead the seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Harvard in a battle of the Ivy League unbeatens Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass. The Tigers, the seven-time defending league champions move to 11-2 and are the lone undefeated team left in the Ivy League. The Crimson drop to 7-5 and 3-1 in league play.
Friebe put Princeton on the board just 12 seconds into the game when she stick-handled up half the field and beat Harvard goalie Katie Zacarian. The Tigers went up 2-0 when junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) passed the ball across the goal to Friebe near the far post who found the back of the cage for her 22nd goal of the season. The Crimson cut the lead in half just three minutes later when Philomena Gambale picked up a rebound and scored at 5:23 but Princeton's Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) pushed the score to 3-1 with the eventual game-winner off an assist from freshman Ashley Sennett (Albion, Maine) at 3:22 of the first half.
Harvard closed the gap to 3-2 with Gambale's second goal of the day on a penalty stroke at 20:50 of the second half but that was as close as it would get as the Tiger's scored twice more to close out the 5-2 win.
Junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) hit the back of the cage on a penalty corner with assists from Friebe and sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) at 7:18. Becker notched the Tigers fifth and final goal of the game off an assist from Miller with 3:30 to go to provide the final 5-2 margin.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) had nine saves on 13 shots in the game. Zacarian had eight saves on 17 shots in the cage for the Crimson.
Princeton will return to action tomorrow against Boston University at 1 p.m. before returning home to face Cornell in an Ivy League match up on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
