Princeton, N.J. - Senior forward Mike Nugent scored his second goal of the night with three minutes left in double overtime giving Princeton at 2-1 win at Lourie-Love Field on Friday night. Nugent slipped past Cornell goalie Doug Allen for the game-winning open-netter at 116:27.
After a scoreless first half, Cornell took a 1-0 lead when Ted Papadopoulos scored at 58:14. Nugent, who leads the Tigers with nine goals and 21 points, nodded the score at 1-1 with his first goal of the night at the 72nd minute. Freshman Adrian Melville picked up an assist on the play, giving him 12 points on the year.
Princeton outshot Cornell 23-19 with Nugent leading the attack with nine shots. Junior Jason White picked up five saves in goal while Allen had 10 for Cornell. Both teams had chances to end the game in the first overtime period, but Allen's save on sophomore Marty Shaw and two errant headers from Big Red defender Nick Haigh kept the game tied going into the final period.
"It is great to finally pick up a win after two straight ties," said Coach Jim Barlow. "Mike (Nugent) saw an opening and was able to put the ball in the net."
Princeton improves to 6-2-4 overall and to 3-1-1 in the Ivy League. Cornell drops to 4-4-2 on the year and 0-3-2 in the conference. The Tigers take their five game unbeaten streak into Sunday's showdown with No. 6 Indiana. The Hoosier visit Lourie-Love Field for the first-ever match-up between the two teams. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
