Princeton, N.J. - Senior forward Mike Nugent scored his third goal of the weekend and 10th goal of the season as Princeton and Indiana battled to a 1-1 tie at Lourie-Love Field on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers extend their unbeaten streak to six and push their overall record to 6-2-5 while No. 7 Indiana moves to 11-3-2.
The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard when 2000 All-America selection Pat Noonen scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season at 27:22. Princeton answered with its leading scorer, Nugent, beating two defenders off a perfect cross from junior Matt Douglas at 39:14.
"It was a big weekend for us," says Nugent. "It would have been real nice to pick up a victory here today, especially considering the fact that we dominated play for most of the game." Princeton outshot Indiana 19-13 and earned 11 corner kicks compared to one for the Hoosiers. Junior Jason White finished with five saves and Indiana goalie Colin Rodgers ended the game with seven. Coming into the game Rodgers was second in the nation in goals-against average (0.42) and White stood nationally at No. 20 with a 0.81 average.
The tie sets a Princeton record for most ties in season, breaking the old mark of four established in 1961. Princeton has yet to allow a goal in 176 minutes of overtime played this year.
"A tie is always better than a loss," says Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "But we played well enough to win today, we played as well as we have all year. Every game is important and our players did a great job of executing today."
Princeton returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 31 when it travels to Villanova for a 2 p.m. match. The Tigers return to Ivy League play next Saturday, Nov. 3 at Pennsylvania.
