Villanova, Pa. - Senior Mike Nugent led Princeton past Villanova with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 Tiger win on Wednesday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. Junior Jason White picked up his eight shutout in goal as Princeton improved to 7-2-5 on the year.
Nugent, who was named the IvyLeagueSports.com Player of the Week on Monday, connected on his team- and league-high 11th goal of the season 10 minutes into the contest. Nugent started things off when he dribbled past defenders off a forced turnover near the top of the Villanova box and beat Wildcat goalkeeper Sean Teesdale giving Princeton a 1-0 lead.
Senior Will Rodgers knocked in his first goal of the year off a Nugent free kick at 72:18 to make the score 2-0 and classmate Matt Behncke wrapped up the scoring at 82:21 with his fifth goal this season. Freshman Arturo Tafolla picked up an assist on the play for his first collegiate point.
The Tigers outshot Villanova 21-7, with 12 shots on goal. Princeton's only allowed two shots on goal, bringing White's save total to 85 on the year. Nugent has 26 points, 14 better than freshman teammate Adrian Melville who is second in the Ivy League with 12.
Princeton returns to conference play on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Pennsylvania. The Tigers are 3-1-1 in the Ivy League and have the longest current unbeaten streak at five. Saturday's game is part of a men's-women's doubleheader and is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
