PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team to a dominating 8-0 win over Cornell in Ivy League action on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. A total of seven different Tigers registered at least one point in the win, which moves Princeton to 13-2 and 5-0 during Ivy action. The Big Red drop to 7-7 and 2-4 in league play.
Junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) got the scoring started for the Tigers with a goal off of an assist from sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) with 22:03 remaining in the first half. Princeton struck again less then a minute later when sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) scored off an assist from Townsend at 21:13 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Friebe's first goal of the game came at 16:50 of the first half. Picketts took a shot that was blocked by Cornell goalkeeper Kaitlin Tierney, but the rebound bounced right to Friebe, who collected the ball and shot it into the back of the cage.
The Tigers added to their lead at 12:48 with a goal from junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.). Freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) took a shot from the left side of the cage and the rebound bounced to Becker, who was able to get the ball up and over the downed Cornell goalie to give Princeton a 4-0 lead going into the half.
Friebe opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal at 31:31. Townsend connected for her second goal of the game on a penalty corner at 29:31 with assists from Friebe and Miller to put the Tigers up 6-0.
Princeton took a 7-0 lead at 13:18 on Friebe's third goal of the afternoon. Freshman Alexis Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) picked up the assist on the play. The goal was Friebe's 25th of the season and made her Princeton's all-time leader for goals in a season. The previous record of 24 goals in a season was set by Kristy Hale in 1996.
Natalie Martirosian added a goal on a penalty stroke with 7:11 remaining as the Tigers cruised to an 8-0 win. Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) had to make just one save in her 52:58 in the cage. Junior Zehra Nizami (Hong Kong) played the final 17:02 in goal for the Tigers and faced no shots. Tierney finished with 11 saves while allowing eight goals for the Big Red.
