PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team got the go-ahead goal from freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) as the seventh-ranked Tigers held on for the 3-2 victory over Yale in Ivy League action Tuesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. The win moves Princeton to 14-2 and one step closer to its eighth straight Ivy title with a 6-0 league record and just one game remaining. Yale drops to 7-9 and 1-5 during Ivy action.
Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) got the scoring started for the Tigers at 26:23 of the first period. She received a great pass from junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) and was able to get past the Yale defense to knock a shot into the back of the cage for a 1-0 Princeton lead. Friebe added to the lead with another goal at 20:40. The play started on a penalty corner when Friebe pushed the ball to Martirosian, who fired a pass back to Friebe who then turned and blasted a shot past the Yale goalie Krissy Nesburg to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. The goal was Friebe's 13th during Ivy play this year, which breaks the old record of 12 league goals in a season. Friebe broke the Ivy record for points in a season when she registered her 28th point in the game against Cornell. She now has 64 points (27 goals 10 assists) overall and 32 points (13 goals, 6 assists) in league play.
Yale closed the gap with a goal at 10:24 of the first half. Freshman Sarah Driscoll (Belle Mead, N.J.) took a shot but the rebound bounced around in front of the Princeton cage and sophomore Jana Halfon (Richmond, Va.) knocked it in to close the gap to 2-1 heading into halftime.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 with a goal on a penalty corner with 11:39 remaining in the game. Halfon pushed the ball to Driscoll, who provided the stick stop and Caroline Thompson (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) connected for the goal.
Princeton reclaimed the lead a minute later when Martirosian knocked in a Becker pass for the eventual game winner at 10:24. Yale eventually pulled its goalie and replaced her with a field player with 53 seconds remaining but could not gain an advantage as the Orange and Black held on for a 3-2 win.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) had one save in the cage for the Tigers. Nesburg had a solid game for Yale, finishing with eight saves.
Princeton will look to win its eighth straight Ivy League title when it closes out the regular season at Pennsylvania on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
