Princeton, N.J. - Freshman Ashley Sennett (Albion, Maine) scored two goals to help the Princeton field hockey team advance to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Championships with a 4-1 win over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Sennett opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 8:22 of the first half to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. It looked like that lead was going to hold into the half, but Krisanne Duchemin (Mashpee, Mass.) scored for the Huskies with just 8.2 seconds remaining to tie the game at 1-1 going into the intermission. Liane Dixon (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) registered an assist on the play.
Freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) opened the second half scoring for Princeton when she fired a shot through the Huskies defense and into the back of the cage for the eventual game-winner at 23:23. Junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) put the Tigers up 3-1 at 16:56 of the second half. Northeastern goalie Emily Roy came out of the cage to play a free ball but Sennett and Becker were there and Becker was able to get a stick on the ball and get a shot through Roy's legs for a two-goal Princeton lead.
Sennett's second goal of the afternoon came at 5:39 and provided the icing on the cake for the Tigers. Becker chased down a long pass just before it crossed the endline to keep a Princeton scoring opportunity alive. Sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) got the ball and sent a pass across to Sennett, who fired a shot past the Huskies goalkeeper and into the left side of the cage to provide the final 4-1 margin.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) stepped it up for the Tigers in goal, finishing with seven saves, including a diving stick save on a point blank Northeastern shot to hold the Huskies to just one goal. Junior Emily Roy (Winslow, Maine) turned in a great game for Northeastern, finishing with a season-high 13 saves.
The win sets the stage for a second round meeting with defending national champion Old Dominion on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Tigers handed the Lady Monarchs a 2-1 loss back on September 30, but Old Dominion holds a 6-2 lead in the all-time series. The winner will walk away with a berth in next weekend's Final Four, to be played at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
