Knowing how superstitious Princeton field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente is, perhaps she'll intentionally get stuck in an elevator before every game.

When it was time for the bus to leave the hotel for second-ranked Princeton's opener against No. 18 Old Dominion Friday afternoon on Day 1 of the Conference Crossover at North Carolina, Tagliente was nowhere to be seen — unless you looked in one of the hotel elevators. She was eventually able to pull the doors open and hop out about a foot away from the lobby.

If Tagliente was late to the bus, her team got off of it quickly. Anna Faulstich scored in the first minute of the game as Princeton rolled to a season-opening 4-0 win on a sweltering afternoon as temperatures approached triple digits. Day 2 of the event will be Sunday, when Princeton plays the host Tar Heels (12:30).

Princeton started nine players who also started last year in the NCAA championship game, a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Northwestern. To start the new season, Princeton got out quickly and never looked back.

Faulstich's goal, after the Tigers drew a penalty corner just 32 seconds in, came when she redirected a drive from Tabby Vaughan into the top of the net. It became 3-0 by halftime on goals by Hope Delaney (a reverse blast for the first of her career) and Pru Lindsey. Molly Nye scored in the third quarter.

Princeton outshot ODU 18-6 as the Tiger D of Ottilie Sykes, Clem Houlden and Gabriella Anderson took away most scoring opportunities in front of goalie Olivia Caponiti, who picked up the shutout.
