Final Stats
PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) registered three goals and two assists as Princeton handed Rutgers a 5-1 loss in non-conference action tonight at Class of 1952 Stadium. Junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) also scored two goals for the Tigers. Tonight is the fourth time this season that Friebe has scored at least three goals. She currently leads the nation in points, points per game, goals and goals per game.
Princeton opened the scoring with two identical goals from Townsend on penalty corners. In both cases Friebe started the play with a push to sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.). Miller provided the stick stop for Townsend, who was then able to blast the ball into the back left of the cage. The first goal came at 32:27 of the first half and the second came just 1:48 later to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
Friebe's first goal of the night gave the Tigers a three-goal cushion with 3:12 remaining in the first half. The play started in similar fashion to the first two goals, but in this case Townsend passed down to Friebe who was standing to the left of the cage and was able to knock the ball in for a 3-0 Princeton lead.
Rutgers got on the board with 2:43 remaining in the first half on a goal by sophomore Colleen Manicre. Sophomore Erica Hartwig's initial shot was blocked by Tiger goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) but the rebound bounced back to Hartwig, who passed to Manicre to set up the Scarlet Knights' only goal of the night.
Princeton added to its lead at 25:04 of the second half off of a give-and-go between Friebe and freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.). Friebe tracked down a ball in the corner and passed it up to Martirosian. Friebe then received the return pass from Martirosian and was able to take the ball along the endline and fire it past the Rutgers keeper for a 4-1 Princeton lead. She scored her third goal of the night with 15:43 remaining to provide the final 5-1 margin.
Baril, a junior co-captain for the Tigers, finished the night with three saves while allowing just one goal in her 49:44 in the cage. Junior Zehra Nizami (Hong Kong) came on to close out the game in goal for Princeton, playing the final 20:16 and finishing with no saves. Sophomore Stacy Guenzle registered 12 saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights.
