STATE COLLEGE, PA. - The Princeton field hockey team, ranked No. 5, suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 17 Penn State this afternoon at Bigler Field. The win snaps a three-game Tiger winning streak over the Nittany Lions, including a 4-2 win in the first round of last year's NCAA tournament. The loss drops Princeton to 7-2, while Penn State improves to 5-6.
"It was a pretty lackluster performance across the board," said head coach Beth Bozman. "I don't think that we looked sharp today. We just did not pick it up when we needed to pick it up. We had lots of opportunities and were just not able to capitalize on really dangerous situations. I think that Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) played good game."
Senior Kiley Kulina paced the Nittany Lion attack, dishing off an assist on senior Meredith Shulzitski's goal at 29:39 of the first half before scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty corner with 33:21 remaining in the game.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass) had four saves in goal for the Tigers. Junior Anne Zinkavich made six saves in goal for Penn State, recording her first solo shutout of the season, and handing the Tigers their first shutout since a 2-0 loss to Maryland last season.
Princeton (7-2, 2-0 Ivy League) will travel to take on Delaware on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and Brown on Saturday, Oct. 12 at noon.
